From the start of its operations, one of the values to which Collahuasi has given most emphasis is its commitment to the development of the communities of the Tarapacá Region. This is reflected in a range of initiatives that seek to enhance the quality of life of their inhabitants.  

Collahuasi is the main economic actor of the Tarapacá Region and, as such, cannot be absent from the needs of those who live close to its operations. This is why it is involved with neighbouring communities through projects that contribute to their sustainable development and why investment in the community is one of the key components of its social responsibility policy.  

One of the ways in which the company seeks to understand the expectations and needs of the communities is through “working groups” which provide an opportunity for dialogue and open and participative analysis of a community’s interests.

In 2009, Collahuasi’s social investment totalled US$11.5 million, including US$7.8 million in the form of investment in the community. This represented an increase of 96% on 2008.   

In its social responsibility programme, the company has opted to focus on the following areas: healthcare, education, community social development, entrepreneurship and job creation, the environment, sports, and the arts and culture.
