Human Rights

Collahuasi adheres to the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights as explicitly stated in its Human Resources Policy.

One of the company’s principles states that, “we act with care and in compliance with the labour legislation in force, taking into account the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as it refers to our relations with our workers and we seek to ensure fulfilment of this principle as regards both our own workers and those of contractors”.

For Collahuasi, respect for human rights is essentially a matter of respect for fundamental labour rights, non-discrimination and conflict resolution.

Collahuasi’s commitment in the area of human rights is reflected principally in one of the values that guide the way in which it does business: RESPECT or, in other words, “to show consideration for others simply as people, independently of rank, faith, gender or experiences, and always to treat others as we would like to be treated”. The underlying idea which the company seeks to promote within the organisation is that of “treating others and those around me as I would like to be treated”.

Similarly, the company does not accept anti-union practices. It, therefore, guarantees the right to freedom of association and collective bargaining and has taken steps to apply this to its workers. As of December 2009, 67.08% of Collahuasi’s total workforce was covered by the collective agreement, corresponding mainly to long-standing operators and maintenance workers.

Collahuasi has a policy of not hiring minors at its worksites and also prohibits forced labour by its direct workers and its collaborators.
