Our People
For Collahuasi, people are a priority. Accordingly, our Vision seeks to position the company as a “preferred employer” where people have the opportunity to develop their skills, with flexibility and leadership, in order to address the challenges of the future.
In 2009, Collahuasi’s workforce increased by 17.4%, with the incorporation of 329 workers, and, as of end-2009, the company had 2,221 direct employees, including temporary workers, trainees and apprentices. In 2009, 5,103 contractors also worked for the company, either in operations or projects.
In line with Collahuasi’s commitment to providing job stability, 96% of its direct employees have an indefinite contract.
From the start of its operations, Collahuasi has given priority to local hiring and, as of December 2009, 58% of its employees were from the Tarapacá Region while 11% were from the Arica and Parinacota Region and 11% from the Antofagasta Region.
One way in which Collahuasi promotes local jobs is through the Apprentices Programme it created in 2008. This initiative provides training (theoretical and practical) in mine and plant operations and maintenance for 18-24 year-olds. In 2009, 710 young people applied to the programme - up by 16% on 2008 - and 65 were selected. It should also be noted that, in 2009, the Apprentices Programme was extended to six new communities in the Tarapacá Region and seven in the Antofagasta Region.
