In the last period, the microtunnel boring machines “Valentina” and “Piqai” successfully completed, as scheduled, the construction of the seawater intake and discharge tunnels, respectively. This milestone paved the way for another challenge: the safe retrieval of both machines from the seabed along the coast where the Company’s port is located.

Thanks to the C20+ Training and Employability Program, 20 young people from the municipalities of Pozo Almonte, Alto Hospicio, and Iquique successfully completed their secondary education. In an emotional ceremony, they proudly received their diplomas, marking a significant milestone in their lives.

After relentless months of work, the different areas of C20+ are beginning to complete their construction processes to initiate the Pre-commissioning and Commissioning phases—fundamental stages in achieving the project’s goal of delivering desalinated water from Puerto Patache to the Collahuasi operation in the Tarapacá mountain range.

It is no mystery that women have joined, and rightfully so, various productive sectors in our country, adding value with their skills, often in sectors that until recently were traditionally male-dominated. With this vision of parity and inclusion, the C20+ Training and Employability Program also works, benefiting residents of the Tarapacá Region.

In the traditionally male-dominated mining industry, significant changes are taking place to promote gender equality and break ingrained stereotypes in the sector. In line with Collahuasi’s Inclusion and Diversity Policy, the C20+ Project, which currently has a female workforce close to 10%, encourages the integration, participation, and empowerment of women across all areas.

Iquique hosted 12 South American teams for the Copa Conmebol Libertadores Futsal Beach, with support from the C20+ project by Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi, the Municipality of Iquique, and the Regional Government of Tarapacá. The fifth edition of the international sports championship took place at the newly adapted Arena Cavancha.

The C20+ project provides local jobs by supporting regional artisans, boosting sustainable work.

Iquique was once again the host city for the CONMEBOL Sub20 Beach Soccer Cup, an event made possible through a public-private partnership involving Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi and its C20+ project, the Municipality of Iquique, the National Professional Football Association, the Chilean Football Federation, CONMEBOL, and Deportes Iquique.

As the C20+ project progresses, the logistical and technical challenges involved in the arrival of the key supplies necessary for its development are not overlooked. The commitment of the entire team stands out in ensuring the company’s investment and the continuity of its operation for the coming decades.

The C20+ project took an important step toward raising awareness of road safety by implementing an advanced GPS control system in the vehicles that are part of its organization.

A total of 22 students, including two former students from the Robert Johnson Methodist School in Alto Hospicio, were certified after passing the Residential Electrical Installations course. This initiative was organized by the C20+ project of Collahuasi in collaboration with Tecno Fast, aiming to complement their academic preparation for future entry into the job market.

Working tirelessly, Maestranza Osiel Rodríguez -MOR- Tanks is focused on the production of four desalinated water storage tanks for the C20+ project, which will supply this resource to the Collahuasi operation.

The collaborative work between the C20+ project and Compass Group allowed 15 residents from the municipalities of Pozo Almonte, Alto Hospicio, and Iquique to get certified as kitchen assistants, giving them the opportunity to join the company specialized in food services as part of this important initiative.

Collaborative teamwork and a focus on the safety of individuals were the key features present during the transportation of the 11,042 pipes, which are shaping the pipeline and pumping system that will transport the water resource from the desalination plant to the Collahuasi operation for its continued operation.

As part of its commitment to environmental care and sustainability, the C20+ project is implementing an initiative aimed at recycling cigarette butts so they can be repurposed for new uses.

Considered one of the most significant sites for the C20+ project, the first pipes began arriving to form part of the water transportation system that will supply Collahuasi’s operation with this resource, from the desalination plant to be located at Puerto Patache.

Golden joints, or “golden joints” as they are also called, are not exactly joints coated in gold as we might assume. A total of 48 people from the municipalities of Pica and Pozo Almonte were trained by the Training and Employability Program of the C20+ Project, which aims to build local capacities in the communities of the Tarapacá Region to improve their job opportunities as well as their quality of life.

The pumping station, also known as PS5, is located at an altitude of about 3,600 meters and is the last station in the desalinated water pumping system, before reaching the transfer station and finally the discharge pools in Ujina, which will contribute to the operational continuity of Collahuasi.

With the goal of continuing to promote sports, recreation, and a healthy lifestyle, the C20+ Project inaugurated four sports fields for the practice of small-sided soccer in its three camps. This will further encourage healthy competition and teamwork among those living and working at the site.

A total of 21 students from the Metal Constructions course at the Nirvana Bicentennial High School in the municipality of Alto Hospicio received their diplomas certifying their Arc Welding certification at various levels by Cesmec.

February witnessed significant progress in investments aimed at further enhancing the recreational and leisure spaces for those in the Project’s camps. This includes the opening of gyms at Camp 1 and Puerto, expanding the available options alongside the one already operational at Camp 2.

With the goal of improving their employability and providing them with new skills, 22 students from the “Metal Constructions” program at the Nirvana Bicentennial High School in Alto Hospicio were certified by Cesmec after successfully completing the Arc Welding course at various levels, an initiative developed and funded by the C20+ Project of Collahuasi.

A total of 46 people from the municipalities of Pozo Almonte and Alto Hospicio successfully completed the Security Guard course, which will allow them to become certified and gain the tools needed to access new and better job opportunities in this field in the Tarapacá Region.  

Caring for the environment is not just about recycling; it involves respecting the flora and fauna of the places where we live and work. For this reason, the C20+ Project has launched a campaign aimed at protecting the Black Skimmer that inhabits the area.
